3 days · balanced pace
3 Days in Chongqing
An arrival afternoon and two full sightseeing days from a Jiefangbei base: the central peninsula, the south bank, then Liziba and the western neighbourhoods. Suggested times leave space for meals and transfers; choose fewer stops if you also depart on day three.
Who this itinerary is for
Good fit if
First-time visitors with an arrival afternoon, two full days and time for stairs
Look elsewhere if
An early departure on day three, a low-walking trip, or anyone also trying to include Wulong
At a glance
Walking figures are planning estimates derived from the walking difficulty of each stop, not measured distances. Across the whole trip that is roughly 21.4 km.
Day 1
Arrival and the peninsula
Check in and leave your bags, then explore the upper city before the evening view at Hongya Cave.
Begin around the Liberation Monument after dropping your bags. If your flight is delayed, go directly to dinner and keep only the Hongya Cave visit.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 30 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Some
Choose a short section of Shibati instead of descending every staircase. Keep enough energy to return to the upper streets.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 15 min
- Walking
- Hard
- Stairs
- Many
From the previous stop (walk): Walk toward the upper end of Shibati. The descent inside the area is optional; check the return route before going down.
Approach on Cangbai Road at the upper level. Choose one permitted exterior viewpoint; check today’s lighting and crowd controls before leaving the hotel.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 30 min
- Walking
- Hard
- Stairs
- Many
From the previous stop (mixed): From the Jiaochangkou side, Line 2 to Linjiangmen is an alternative to a longer walk. Continue toward Cangbai Road; use a taxi only where current traffic controls allow.

Day 2
Rivers, cableway and the south bank
See the confluence from the peninsula, cross the Yangtze once, then stay on the south bank for the afternoon and dinner.
Visit the public riverside and Raffles City area. Any paid observation experience is optional and needs its own booking and extra time.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 45 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Some
Use the north terminal at Xinhua Road; Xiaoshizi exit 5B is the official metro approach. Check today’s operating notice and obtain the required queue number. If the wait breaks your afternoon, cross by metro instead.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 30 min
- Walking
- Easy
- Stairs
- Some
From the previous stop (metro): From Chaotianmen, use Line 1 to Xiaoshizi and follow exit 5B toward the north cableway terminal. A signed walking route is another option; allow a meal break before joining a queue.
Explore one section at your own pace; the old street is stepped. Skip the steeper lanes if you are tired rather than sacrificing the riverside evening.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 15 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Many
From the previous stop (walk): After the cableway crossing, continue from the south terminal toward Longmenhao. Check the entrance level and use the signed walking route. If the cableway is skipped, Line 6 from Xiaoshizi to Shangxinjie gets you to this bank.
Choose a specific stretch of Nanbin Road and a dinner location. Return to the hotel by the most practical metro or taxi route for that point; Nanbin Road is much longer than one short promenade.
- Suggested time
- 2 hr
- Walking
- Easy
- Stairs
- Some
From the previous stop (walk): Downhill from the old street to the promenade.
If something is closed
Day 3
Liziba, Eling and an optional old-town afternoon
Start with Line 2, then choose how much of the western city you want to cover. Keep a shorter version if you have an onward journey.
From Linjiangmen, take Line 2 toward Yudong to Liziba. Follow current signs to the viewing area. Suggested stop time is 45 minutes, not a prediction of crowd or queue conditions.
- Suggested time
- 45 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Some
Use the cafes and terraces for a break. If the uphill connection is awkward or you have less energy, skip Eling and take a simpler western-city route.
- Suggested time
- 1 hr 30 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Some
From the previous stop (taxi): Compare a taxi uphill with the signed walking route. During traffic controls, confirm a legal pickup/drop-off point rather than expecting door-to-door access.
This is the optional longer afternoon, not a stop to squeeze in before a flight. For an early departure, omit it and return for your bags.
- Suggested time
- 2 hr 30 min
- Walking
- Moderate
- Stairs
- Some
From the previous stop (metro): Reach Eling station by a route suitable for your walking ability, then take Line 1 toward Bishan to Ciqikou. Follow current station signs; the old town has multiple approaches.

What to arrange before each day
Arrival and your hotel base
This route assumes a central base; check crossings if staying elsewhere.
Airport to Jiefangbei, step by step
Line 10 via Zengjiayan, the T2 alternative and late-arrival choices.
Choose a Jiefangbei hotel
Compare four properties and ask about the vehicle entrance before booking.
Hongya Cave entrances
Know the difference between upper Cangbai Road and the riverside before your first evening.
Cableway tickets are not immediate boarding
The operator’s 2026 notice describes ticket purchase through the official 长江索道 account, staffed counters and machines, with boarding by queue number. Check the current procedure even if you buy through another platform. A ticket does not promise an immediate crossing.
For this route, a single crossing toward the south bank is sufficient. If the cableway is stopped or the wait is too long, use Line 6 from Xiaoshizi to Shangxinjie, then continue with Longmenhao. Check service information before leaving the peninsula.
Rain, Monday or less walking?
Changes are editorial options. Museum admission, cableway service and attraction access remain subject to current notices.
Budget the trip by what you actually use
Room and airport journeys
Use your selected room’s full payable rate, then add the arrival and departure journey for your real terminals or stations.
City transport
Compare metro journeys with the specific uphill or luggage-heavy taxi legs you need. These transfer notes are route suggestions, not measured travel times.
Optional paid experiences
The cableway, observation decks, temporary exhibitions and a Wulong extension are separate choices. Check current prices and inclusions before adding them.
Meals and flexibility
Keep a meal break each day and enough flexibility to replace an outdoor block. Holiday queues can matter more than the scheduled stop duration.
Useful official checks and next steps
Recheck operating notices shortly before your visit.
Three Gorges Museum admission announcement
The November 2025 announcement confirms the end of the main museum’s reservation requirement.
Museum visitor guide
Regular hours, Monday closure and visitor information. Plan to arrive well before the last admission cutoff.
Cableway operator
Check current maintenance notices and ticket information, or use the official 长江索道 account.
Add a separate Wulong day
Use Wulong South station and plan the return mountain connection before booking extras.
Planning notes
Stops are ordered by area first and time of day second, so you are not crossing the city repeatedly. Stairs and level changes still require decisions about the route and the return journey.
Timings are a sequence rather than a schedule. We have not individually verified the opening hours of every stop, so treat the day as an order of events and check anything you have specifically come for.
Chongqing's stairs are the reason this plan is sequenced the way it is. Read the terrain guide for what the difficulty labels mean.
