Chongqing Metro Guide

How to use the metro well in a city where the stations are engineering projects — including why choosing the right exit matters more here than anywhere.

The metro is the fastest way between areas and the most confusing way to arrive at a specific door.

  • If phone payment fails, ask the staffed ticket counter about bank-card tickets or cash options. A shopping payment code is not necessarily a transport code.
  • Signage and announcements include English, and the system is genuinely easy to navigate as a network.
  • Stations are deep. The escalator run from platform to street can be several minutes on its own.
  • Exits are at different elevations. The right exit can save ten minutes; the wrong one can add a hill.

We do not publish a line-by-line map here, because network changes would make it wrong quickly. Check a current map for specific journeys.

Time-sensitive information. Entry rules, opening hours, fares and app features can change. Check the linked operator information for your travel date. Found an update? Email our local team.

Why the metro here is unusual

The network was built to solve problems that roads could not. It crosses rivers, runs through the middle of residential blocks, and climbs gradients that would defeat a conventional system.

That makes it extraordinarily useful. It also means a station is not a simple set of steps from street to platform, and the walking inside stations is part of your journey time.

The things that will actually trip you up

  • Exit selection

Stations can have many exits spread over a large area at different heights. Look at the exit map before you go up, and match the exit to your destination rather than to the street name.

  • Walking time inside the station

Allow several minutes for escalators and corridors at large interchange stations. The platform-to-street leg is often longer than the ride.

  • The end of service

Services stop earlier than in some comparable cities. If your evening plan runs late, check the last train before you commit to it.

  • Luggage at interchange stations

Changes often mean stairs as well as escalators. With heavy bags, plan the route so that the change happens at a station you have looked at, or avoid the change altogether.

Metro or taxi?

The honest answer in Chongqing is often both, alternating by the shape of the journey.

Paying for the metro

Chongqing's municipal government reports that staffed metro ticket counters accept domestic and overseas bank cards. Ask the counter for a ticket if your phone payment is not working.

A 2025 municipal notice also describes cash and card purchases for physical tourist passes. Ask staff which ticket makes sense for your journey; products and terms differ.

In-app transport codes may need separate activation. Do not assume that a bank card accepted at a ticket counter can be tapped directly at a gate.

Common questions

Is the metro crowded?
At peak times it is busy, particularly on the lines serving the centre. Outside the commuting peaks it is comfortable, and Chongqing's metro is generally less packed than Beijing or Shanghai.
Is it accessible for wheelchairs and prams?
Ask station staff about the exact entrance, interchange and exit on your route. A lift at one entrance does not guarantee a continuous step-free journey, and equipment availability can change.
Can I bring luggage on the metro?
Yes, though large bags at busy times and at interchange stations are awkward, and there may be size restrictions on some lines.
How do I know when to get off?
Announcements and signage include English, and station names are displayed in Latin script as well as Chinese. Counting stops is unnecessary.
