Why visit

This is the single best answer to the question of what makes Chongqing different. It is not a sight with an entrance; it is the city's own pedestrian network, and walking part of it explains the terrain better than any viewpoint.

Terrain warning

This is a stair route. Sections have handrails and lighting; some do not. Not suitable for anyone avoiding steps, and there are limited options to leave midway.

What to expect

Almost empty compared with any other place on this list. Daylight is advisable: lighting on the quieter sections is patchy.

The wider Jiefangbei area behaves like this: The pedestrian core and riverside are different levels. Ask for the route between the vehicle entrance, reception and your room; straight-line distance can be misleading.

How long to allow

Between 1 hr and 3 hr, depending on how much you stop. The planner uses 1 hr as a minimum.

Nearest metro

Jiaochangkou较场口(Line 1, Line 2)

Pick a section rather than attempting the whole route. The signed segments nearest the centre are the ones with the most reliable wayfinding.
