Chongqing is a set of districts stacked on different ridges, connected by bridges and stairs rather than by a grid. Which one you are in changes what the city feels like.

Where to stay
江北机场片区
For layovers, pre-dawn departures and transit stopovers. Functionally useful, but not somewhere to base a holiday.
Good for 1 night

Where to stay
观音桥
The commercial centre of the north bank. Busier with residents than with visitors, and noticeably flatter than the south-bank core.
Good for 2-3 nights

Where to stay
解放碑
A practical base for a first two- or three-night visit: central sights and restaurants are in the same district. Choose the entrance as carefully as the map pin; the pedestrian core and the river are at different levels.
Good for 2-4 nights

Where to stay
南滨路
The south-bank riverside promenade, looking straight back at the skyline. The obvious base if the photographs are the point of the trip.
Good for 2-3 nights

Where to stay
沙坪坝 · 磁器口
West of the centre, anchored by the old streets of Ciqikou and a large university district. Slower, cheaper, and a different version of Chongqing.
Good for 2 nights
Quarters

A preserved riverside trading town on the west side of the city, now given over almost entirely to narrow shopping lanes and food stalls.

A rebuilt hillside street on the south bank where the two rivers converge, arranged as a stepped run of courtyards above the water.

A printing factory converted into a small hillside district of studios, cafes and rooftop terraces, sitting just below Eling Park.

The main commercial and eating district of the north bank, with the city's largest concentration of everyday restaurants and street food.

The pedestrian core of Chongqing, arranged around the Liberation Monument, with the densest concentration of shops, food and hotels in the city.

A restored hillside street on the south bank, stepped up from the river with the north-bank skyline directly opposite.

A signed walking route threaded through the old cliff-side lanes of the Yuzhong peninsula, linking neighbourhoods that the roads cannot reach.

A long riverside promenade on the south bank, lined with restaurants and looking directly back at the north-bank skyline.

A restored hillside quarter of stepped lanes connecting the upper city to the lower town, rebuilt around the remains of an older neighbourhood.
Deciding
If you are staying in a district, that is the neighborhood you will actually spend your evenings in. Everything else is a day trip within the city.
The districts that are easiest to walk — Guanyinqiao, the riverside promenades, the museum quarter — are not the districts with the most sights. The districts with the most sights are the ones with the most stairs. That trade-off is the central decision of a Chongqing trip, and our stay finder exists to make it explicit rather than to hide it behind a recommendation.
