Streets and old quarters
Shibati Old Town
十八梯
Also known as Eighteen Steps
A restored hillside quarter of stepped lanes connecting the upper city to the lower town, rebuilt around the remains of an older neighbourhood.

Why visit
It is the clearest place to feel how Chongqing is stacked vertically: you walk down through a working staircase neighbourhood rather than around it. Quieter than Hongya Cave and closer to how the city actually is.
Terrain warning
The whole area is a staircase. Escalators cover part of the descent but not all of it, and the surface is uneven in places.
What to expect
Far quieter than Hongya Cave at any hour. Late afternoon gives better light on the lower lanes.

The wider Jiefangbei area behaves like this: The pedestrian core and riverside are different levels. Ask for the route between the vehicle entrance, reception and your room; straight-line distance can be misleading.

How long to allow
Between 45 min and 1 hr 30 min, depending on how much you stop. The planner uses 45 min as a minimum.
How to get there
Nearest metro
The upper entrance is close to the metro; the lower exit puts you near the river level, which is a useful way to walk downhill through the city rather than up.
Walking the last stretch

Compare the route and entrance level before combining nearby places. Doing them together is the difference between a day of travel and a day of sightseeing.
