Visa and Entry for Chongqing
Which entry route applies to you, what each one requires, and the checks that catch people out at the border rather than at check-in.
Most visitors now enter either visa-free, on transit visa-free entry, or with a standard tourist visa — and the route you qualify for decides your whole itinerary.
- Several nationalities currently hold unilateral visa-free entry to China for short tourist stays. Check your own passport against the current list before assuming anything.
- Transit visa-free entry requires you to be travelling onward to a third country or region. A return to where you came from does not qualify.
- A standard L tourist visa is still the reliable route if neither of the above applies to you, and it removes the routing constraints entirely.
- Rules change, and they change faster than most travel sites update. Always confirm against the National Immigration Administration before you book.
This page explains how the routes work. It is not legal advice and it does not tell you what you are eligible for.

The three routes into China
Almost every visitor to Chongqing arrives through one of these. They have different requirements and different risks.
Unilateral visa-free entry
A set of nationalities may enter China without a visa for a short tourist stay. It is the simplest route and the one with the fewest constraints on your itinerary. It applies to specific passports and has a maximum stay length — both of which are revised periodically.
Transit visa-free entry
For travellers passing through China on the way to a third country or region. The stay allowance is longer, but the routing conditions are strict and are the most common reason people are refused boarding. See our dedicated guide.
A standard tourist visa (L)
Applied for in advance at a Chinese embassy or visa centre. It costs money and takes time, but it removes every routing condition and is the right answer if your plans are complicated or your nationality is not on either visa-free list.
How to work out which route applies to you
Check your passport against the current visa-free list
Look at the National Immigration Administration site, not a travel blog. The list is short enough to read in a minute and it is the only version that matters.
If you are not on it, look at your routing instead
Transit visa-free entry depends on where you are going, not only on your passport. If you are flying Chongqing to a third country, it may apply to you even if unilateral visa-free entry does not.
Confirm your entry port
Transit visa-free entry works at specific ports only. Jiangbei Airport is the port that matters for Chongqing, and it is worth confirming it is on the current list rather than assuming.
Count your days the way the border does
The stay clock does not start when you land. Understand how the allowance is counted before you book a return flight for the last possible day.
If in doubt, get the visa
A refused boarding at your departure airport is a far more expensive mistake than a visa application. If your plans are tight or unusual, the visa is the lower-risk option.
What to have ready at the border
The same things come up every time. None of them is difficult if you have prepared; all of them are difficult at the desk.

Use the transit policy checklist to prepare the passport, full route, entry and exit ports, and dates to confirm with the National Immigration Administration and your airline. The checklist does not issue an eligibility result.
