Hongya Cave
洪崖洞
Also known as Hongyadong, Hong Ya Dong
Hongya Cave is a cliffside dining and shopping complex beside the Jialing River. Its upper entrance is on Cangbai Road; the riverside is a different level. Plan the approach and outside view before joining the crowd.

Your visit in one minute
- Entry
- The general scenic area is free. A shop purchase or separate paid experience is optional.
- Metro
- Xiaoshizi / 小什字, Lines 1 and 6; the official visitor page lists exits 6 and 9.
- Upper approach
- Cangbai Road / 沧白路, level 11; useful when approaching from Jiefangbei.
- Lower approach
- Jiabin Road / 嘉滨路, riverside level 1; a different street elevation.
- Time to allow
- Our suggested visit is 45–90 minutes, with extra time for crowd controls. This is a planning allowance.
A simple route from Jiefangbei
Aim for the upper street first
Use 洪崖洞 沧白路入口 as your destination when coming from the pedestrian centre. Check signs rather than following a shortcut down stairs just because a map pin looks closer.
Choose your view before descending
For a wider outside view, consider the permitted pedestrian space toward Qiansimen Bridge. For a closer upward view, the lower riverside approach is an alternative. Follow current barriers and staff instructions.
Descend only if you want the lower viewpoint
Use the signed internal lift or stairs if open. Account for the return climb or lift queue before committing, especially with children or anyone who finds stairs difficult.
Choose the way home while you still have space
Return to the upper streets for a central hotel, or follow the designated route to a legal vehicle pickup. Send the driver your actual road-level location; the same attraction name can mean a different elevation.
Two street levels, not one front door
Entrance levels are supported by the April 2026 visitor notice; the open gates and route can change with crowd management.
Night views without a rushed visit
Check the light schedule that day
Search the official 洪崖洞 WeChat account for the latest lighting notice. Seasonal announcements replace older ones; sunset is not a guaranteed switch-on time.
Pick one outside viewpoint
Our suggestion is to settle on either the wider bridge-side view or the closer riverside view. Trying to reach every angle during peak crowds can consume the whole evening.
Keep the return route simple
Have dinner before the busiest period or after leaving the crowd. Keep bags light, shoes secure and the hotel address saved.
Check today, then continue your route
These help with the choices that change, and the parts of the trip you can plan ahead.

National Day traffic notice
The September 2026 notice explains temporary controls. For other dates, use current 平安渝中 information rather than assuming this notice still applies.
Find a base around Jiefangbei
Choose a hotel entrance that makes returning from the river straightforward.
Fit the visit into three days
Keep Hongya Cave with the central peninsula instead of making an extra cross-city journey.
Before you go
Do I need to pay someone to enter Hongya Cave?
Does free entry mean no reservation is ever needed?
Which Xiaoshizi exit should I use?
Is the bridge always closed to traffic for visitors?
Why visit
Come for the exterior view and the way the buildings connect the city above to the river below. Our recommendation is to choose one outside viewpoint first, then explore the interior only if the queues and your energy allow.
Terrain warning
Upper and riverside entrances connect by lifts and stairs. Queues or crowd controls can change the route. For a step-free visit, confirm the operating lift route with staff and avoid assuming that the shortest map route is accessible.
What to expect
Evening is popular for the illuminated exterior. Lighting hours change seasonally and may be adjusted; check the official 洪崖洞 account on the day. Major holidays can bring managed pedestrian routes.

The wider Jiefangbei area behaves like this: The pedestrian core and riverside are different levels. Ask for the route between the vehicle entrance, reception and your room; straight-line distance can be misleading.
