Chongqing Food Guide

Chongqing eats with more conviction than almost anywhere in China. The famous dish is hotpot, but the meal that tells you most about the city is a bowl of noodles eaten standing up at eight in the morning.

Eat hotpot once, properly. Eat xiaomian for breakfast every day. Everything else follows from those two.

  • Hotpot is a shared, self-cooked meal built on a beef-tallow broth. Order a divided pot if you are unsure about the heat.
  • Xiaomian is the city's breakfast and its best-value meal. Mix it from the bottom of the bowl before you eat.
  • The best eating is in Guanyinqiao and the smaller streets, not in the tourist core.
